Residents of DeKalb County's District 4, your chance to engage with local politics over coffee and eggs is near. Commissioner Chakira Johnson is extending an invitation to her "Community Connection" breakfast meeting, set for the morning of April 12. The event will be held at the East Central DeKalb Community & Senior Center, according to an announcement on the county’s official website.
New to her role since January 1, 2025, Johnson is not new to DeKalb’s political scene, having served 16 years on the Stone Mountain City Council, twelve as mayor pro tem. The Georgia Tech grad and licensed engineer will tackle her constituency’s concerns and update them on the county affairs. “This meeting is designed to engage with constituents, provide important updates, and offer an opportunity for constituents to ask questions and share their concerns,” details were shared in the county's news announcement.
Johnson isn't the only highlight. Attendees will hear from Maria Houser, the county's Director of Environmental Compliance, as she addresses the $1.5 billion sanitary sewer system improvements. This initiative, mandated by the Consent Decree, will be crucial for maintaining infrastructure and environmental health in the area. "Houser, who serves as the county's first Director of Environmental Compliance, will discuss her leadership in overseeing the $1.5 billion sanitary sewer system improvements required by the Consent Decree," elaborated the county's recent post.
Also on the agenda, representatives from various DeKalb County service departments will attend. Sanitation, Roads & Drainage, along with Law Enforcement and Code Compliance, will have their own chance to present updates and field questions from the community. The promise of a free breakfast adds an additional incentive for community members to join the event. But beware, breakfast is served "until supplies run out." With space and food at a premium, early arrival might be the key to both satiety and civic engagement.
Those interested in staying informed on DeKalb County’s upcoming events and initiatives can look forward to more information disseminated through Commissioner Johnson's communications channels. Whether via social media, email newsletters, or community board postings, the details of the next "Community Connection" breakfast will be readily available for those eager to participate in local governance.
