Denver has recently been spotlighted for its innovative urban development strategies, clinching a ‘Downtown Excellence Award’ from Downtown Colorado Inc. last week. This accolade, as reported by the City and County of Denver, honors its involvement in refining the Downtown Development Authority's (DDA) Plan of Development. Denver was one of the multiple recipients across the state lauded for their exceptional contributions to enhancing downtown areas and commercial corridors at the annual awards ceremony held in Greeley.

According to Bill Mosher, the Chief Projects Officer, "The Plan of Development was a collaborative effort between the city, DDA Board of Directors, city council, and numerous public and private sector interests across the Denver metro area." He also expressed excitement and gratitude for the recognition, adding, "We’re honored to receive this award and continue to be energized by the momentum and excitement surrounding this effort, " as per the City and County of Denver. The initiative underlines Denver's aim to invigorate the city's heart through a focused infusion of public and private investment.

Adeeb Khan, the Executive Director of Denver Economic Development and Opportunity, echoed the sentiment about the strategic importance of the expanded DDA. "The Plan of Development is designed to deliver catalytic investments into our downtown at a crucial time," Khan highlighted, as obtained by the City and County of Denver. He pointed out that such planning is central to the future landscape of the city and the surrounding area, improving the urban core. The endorsement from Downtown Colorado Inc. signifies a nod of approval to Denver’s forward-thinking approach.

Specifically, the Plan of Development targets various sectors, including new development and adaptive reuse, livability and job creation, public spaces, cultural enrichment, and improved connectivity. Since the plan's approval in December 2024, the city has started accepting applications for DDA funding. To date, they have received 18 applications, which encompass a mix of incentives for businesses, private development, public projects, and arts and culture initiatives. These applications will be scrutinized based on a set of criteria to ensure they align with the city's vision and policy objectives as outlined by the DDA's guiding document.
