The tranquility of a Colorado highway was shattered last December when a road rage incident escalated into gunfire, narrowly missing a driver near Fort Carson. The El Paso County Sheriff's Office has been investigating the case, which reached a turning point this past weekend.
Details of the confrontation were made public when the Sheriff’s Office reported that on December 11, 2024, a driver on Highway 115 was brake-checked and harassed by another driver, who eventually pulled up beside them and discharged a firearm into their vehicle. The shooter, subsequently known to be a Department of Corrections employee, fled to Fort Carson after the incident, casting a grim shadow over the region's safety.
Following a meticulous investigation that included the execution of a search warrant, 48-year-old Loyd Dewees was identified as the suspect. According to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, evidence linked Dewees to the shooting, contributing to the subsequent legal proceedings. On Thursday, an arrest warrant was issued, enumerating several charges including Attempted Second-Degree Murder and Illegal Discharge of a Firearm.
As the case progressed, Mr. Dewees adhered to the system he served, turning himself in at the El Paso County Jail, where he awaits the court's judgment on a $50,000 bond. Dewees's employment with the Colorado Department of Corrections adds a layer of complexity and irony to the narrative of a public servant entangled in a serious criminal offense.
