On the late night of April 12, an unsettled scenario unfolded on Via Roma Circle in Clermont, Florida, culminating in the fatal shooting of Eric Escobar, age 39, by a deputy of the Lake County Sheriff's Office (LCSO). Following calls reporting a man exhibiting erratic behavior and banging on a resident's door, LCSO deputies arrived on the scene. According to ClickOrlando, the recently released bodycam footage reveals Escobar ignoring deputy commands before pulling out a firearm, resulting in the fatal incident.
Initial reports were made by concerned residents, one of whom claimed that Escobar was yelling at passing cars and aggressively approached her home while she was inside with her children. The bodycam video, sourced from WFTV, depicts the confrontation escalating after Escobar confesses to having firearms and thereafter, appears to reach for one.
Evidence obtained from the LCSO's body-worn cameras, as reported by ClickOrlando, shows deputies engaging Escobar in a verbal exchange before the situation escalates. He is recorded stating, "There's a (expletive) woman in there," and expressing a need to enter the home, while also alluding to his possession of a gun.
As documented in the footage, the deputy made several attempts at de-escalating the conflict, repeatedly urging Escobar to surrender and warning him of potential lethal force. Despite these efforts, Escobar's non-compliance led to the sheriff's deputy discharging his weapon. After the shooting, the deputy involved was placed on administrative leave, an action consistent with procedure, while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement conducts a review. The victims inside the home did not recognize Escobar, nor had they seen him before this confrontation, which was further described as attempted armed burglary and aggravated assault on law enforcement.
The Lake County Sheriff's Office has yet to provide an extensive comment on the incident, as investigations by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are ongoing.
