Detroit gears up to celebrate the innovation and soulful rhythms of its own homegrown talent, Patrick Prouty, the recently titled City of Detroit Composer Laureate. The bassist and eminent composer is set to bring his musical vision to life at his first annual concert in the esteemed role at the Wright Memorial Public Library, according to the City of Detroit.
Prouty's appointment by Mayor Mike Duggan in September 2024 was far from a shot in the dark. It came highly recommended by a discerning panel of Detroit artists, musicians, and scholars who clearly know to not just throw accolades around lightly. Prouty is the real deal, a regional rocker who has toured globally with big names like Bettye Lavette, and a composer with enough TV and film credits to, effectively, line the walls of your average Detroit cinephile, as reported by the City of Detroit.
A musical journey which began in front of his dad's record collection, through the hallowed classrooms of Wayne State University, has led Prouty to receive a lifetime achievement award from the Michigan Music Hall of Fame just two years ago. And yet, it's his position as the director of orchestra and choirs at the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy that keeps Prouty's roots firmly planted in Detroit soil. According to a concert announcement by the City of Detroit's official website, Prouty continues to actively engage with the community through educational and musical endeavors.
The Wright's stage is prepped to be a platform where Prouty can showcase the sound of Detroit, alongside being the city's creative torch-bearer. His ensemble, "The Detroit Office of Civil Defense," is ready to critically take musical guard. Detroit ACE, partnering with organizations across Detroit to grow investment in the arts, champions the creative workforce and has its hand in the mix. Celebrating five years of their artistic commitment can be witnessed on a flip-book featured on their website. Fans, artists, and the curious should be sure to not just mark the date but to follow their updates on social media channels @detroitcityarts on both Instagram and Facebook. This night at the Wright might just be the rhythmic battery Detroit needs, and no one's better charged to deliver it than Prouty, as per the City of Detroit.
