Bellevue is expanding its food truck offerings with the addition of a new location in downtown. Following the success of the City Hall Plaza food truck program, a new spot at Compass Plaza will begin operating on April 14. Food trucks will be serving a variety of dishes from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Thursday, contributing to the growing dining options in the downtown area, according to the City of Bellevue.
Chief economic development officer Jesse Canedo outlined the impact of last year’s City Hall program, which successfully catered to 3,600 customers and generated $60,000 in net sales for local trucks. “Expanding this amenity to include a new area along the Grand Connection is just one of several ways we’re bringing more activities for people to enjoy in the state’s second largest downtown,” Canedo told the City of Bellevue. The new location is part of the larger Grand Connection Street Eats program, designed to enhance the area's vibrancy and attract more foot traffic.
The new site is a collaboration with the Washington State Food Truck Association and will offer a variety of food trucks, providing options for residents, workers, and visitors in downtown Bellevue. With an increase in people returning to the office, the city’s economic development team has received inquiries about additional food and beverage options. The Compass Plaza location is intended to complement, rather than compete with, the food truck program at City Hall, which continues to operate.
Lori Johnson, president of the Washington State Food Truck Association, expressed her excitement about Bellevue's initiative. "We are excited to see more and more cities using small mobile food establishments in their economic development plans as food trucks are so very popular with the public, inspire new entrepreneurship and are an excellent use of public space," Johnson said, in a statement obtained by the City of Bellevue. The Street Eats program is part of Bellevue's effort to enhance public spaces with a variety of activities, contributing to the larger goals of the Grand Connection initiative.
Bellevue’s initiatives focus on creating communal spaces that reflect the city’s dynamic and connected nature. By expanding these locations, Bellevue is enhancing its role as both a commercial center and a place for community engagement. The Grand Connection initiative aims to link neighborhoods, from Meydenbauer Bay Park through downtown to Eastrail, fostering greater connectivity across the city.
