Drivers navigating through Downtown Jacksonville this Friday morning should prepare for detours as the Law Enforcement Torch Run® for Special Olympics sets to make its way through the city streets. According to a Facebook post from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, road closures will be in effect to accommodate the run, designed to raise money and awareness for a significant cause.
Commuters should specifically note that Bay Street, from Liberty Street to Marsh Street, will be shut down from 9 a.m. to approximately 10:30 a.m. This is the stretch right outside the Police Memorial Building and likely to wreak most havoc on the morning commute, given its centrality to downtown traffic flow. Rerouting will be essential, and with the starting line of the race at the Police Memorial Building at 10 a.m., supporters are invited to cheer on participants.
Additional road closures will include parts of Marsh Street, East Adams Street, East Monroe Street, Palmetto Street, East Beaver Street, and A. Philip Randolph Boulevard. While these closures are not anticipated to be as long in duration, with roads reopening as runners pass through, they will still affect traffic patterns through downtown.
