Atlanta's dReam Center Church of Atlanta, in association with Kiss 104.1 and legal firm 1-800-TruckWreck, backed by the Witherite Law Group, took a concrete step to address the continuing issue of hunger this past Thursday. They hosted a giveaway that began at the break of dawn, seeking to provide 550 meal kits to those in need ahead of the Easter holiday. As reported by The Atlanta Voice, the giveaway featured boxes filled with ham and two sides, a nod to the traditional Easter feast.

Queues formed in the early hours with the first person arriving at 2:30 a.m. This eagerness to secure a meal highlights the importance of such events in the community. The turnout was significant enough to force organizers to wrap up the distribution earlier than the scheduled 10 a.m. closing time. "It’s even more important this year. There’s always food insecurity, but this year, I met people who had government jobs and don’t have them any longer, a postal worker who just got laid off," Amy Witherite, owner of Witherite Law Group and 1-800-TruckWreck, told The Atlanta Voice.

Food insecurity remains a stark reality for many in Atlanta, as echoed by data that suggests around one in eight people in the area are struggling with hunger. FOX 5 Atlanta reported that the dReam Center Church regularly tries to combat this issue with grocery giveaways, especially during holidays when the need seems to become more pronounced. Pastor Chandra Midgette from the church was moved by the impact of the event, saying in an interview with The Atlanta Voice, "My husband and I woke up at two o'clock this morning like it was Christmas time, because we knew that today, somebody who didn’t have an Easter meal would have one."

The total amount of money spent on the initiative was $50,000, signifying a significant investment in the well-being of those facing hunger. The church's chief of staff, Anita Fraser, speaking to FOX 5 Atlanta, said, "This is a food desert community, so it always fills our heart with joy to see them line up." The desire to directly engage with those they are assisting was evident as volunteers met with families to distribute the food personally.
