Duluth's dreams for the Lester Golf Course took on a new shape, but not without a dose of pragmatism. Mayor Roger Reinert, after a presentation by the Lester Golf Working Group to the City Council, outlined a vision for a year-round recreational hub, following extensive community consultation and several pitches that came with hefty price tags. In a statement provided by the City of Duluth, Reinert laid out the fruits of a city-initiated exploration into the future of the Lester property, emphasizing the need for public green space and a master plan to encompass an array of outdoor activities, including golf.
In 2024, the Lester Golf Working Group was assigned the job of finding new life for the greens, beyond their seasonal use, a directive that summoned the wisdom of numerous community and sports organizations, from the Duluth Area Outdoor Alliance (DAOA) to the Cyclists of Gitchee Gumee Shores (COGGS), and many contributed to what appeared to be a complex, multipart puzzle, however not all pieces had a clear fit. "This was no easy task," Reinert said, according to the city's release.
The discussion brought forward three potential routes each fraught with its financial challenges, not striking a definitive solution, thus leaving some Lester loyalists in a holding pattern, Reinert acknowledged the thorny reality of the situation in his statement: "I know it is disappointing to those passionate about Lester that there isn’t a clear path forward as a result of the working group’s efforts." Yet, despite the financial conundrums, a consensual nod to certain elements for the property's redevelopment did emerge, setting the stage for the city’s next steps.
With a commitment to keep Lester from simply existing in limbo the city is now poised to craft a Request for Proposals (RFP) that will curate a space for Lester’s future, balancing community desires with fiscal viability: "Lester cannot continue to sit, so it is now up to City administration and staff to use these common elements to create a master plan RFP that will include green space, outdoor year-round activities and housing," Reinert explained in the release, sketching a blueprint for a recreational nexus that weaves together the threads of Lester’s potential, everything from skiing to biking and beyond.
