Residents of Duluth anticipating a decision on the Safe Bay Interim Use Permit for a Temporary Outdoor Living Site will have to wait a little longer. Due to an unforeseen delay, the City of Duluth's Planning Commission meeting tonight will be void of the expected agenda item. Following a winter storm that took down the required signage for public notice, the Planning Division staff will advise against proceeding with the planned hearing.
According to a document from the City of Duluth published on April 8th, 2025, the next discussion regarding the permit for the site at Vineyard Christian Fellowship has been pushed to May 13. This pause in process comes as city staff follow due process to ensure sufficient public notice is given, respecting the right of the community to be informed and engaged on the matter.
The postponement is significant as the proposal for the Temporary Outdoor Living Site has been a pressing issue, with many community members invested in the outcome. As housing challenges persist, initiatives like Safe Bay have been eyed as potential relief for those without shelter, especially during the harsh Duluth winters.
Public comments already collected by the Planning and Economic Development Department will be carried over to the May meeting. Civilians wishing to contribute further to the discussion are encouraged to direct their feedback to [email protected].
