Mark your calendars for Public Works Week, folks, because it's just around the corner, running from May 18-24. It's one of those events that might not be on everyone's radar, but it plays a critical role in the city's everyday operations. As Russ Matthys, Eagan's director of Public Works, described in a piece by the City of Eagan, "People don’t think much about public works — as long as things are going right." His department's unseen work includes essential services like drinking water delivery and wastewater management.
But Public Works goes beyond just keeping things flowing smoothly. The department is a complex organism, with divisions handling the transportation network, utility services, and even the preservation of local water systems. They're out there all year, come rain, come shine, plowing streets, fixing roads, and safeguarding the environment. The next time you take a sip of tap water or your car doesn't fall into a pothole, that's them doing their thing.
Despite their crucial behind-the-scenes work, the Public Works team doesn't shy away from the spotlight when it comes to community engagement. Through events like Cops & Bobbers and the Ice Fishing Fest, they're getting out there and connecting with residents. "It’s such an honor to serve this community, and help people learn more about lakes and wetlands and how we can all take care of them,” said Jessie Koehle, water resources specialist, in a statement obtained by the City of Eagan. Public Works Week offers a chance for the community to give the nod to these unsung heroes.
And speaking of opportunities to celebrate the crucial services provided by Public Works, don't miss out on the Big Rig Rally happening Thursday, May 29 from 4-7 p.m. Interested parties, include kids and adults alike, can check out equipment up close – from mowers and plow trucks to emergency vehicles like police cars and fire engines. There's more than just heavy machinery to enjoy; the event will have face painting, equipment demos, and even some giveaways while supplies last. Plus, attendees are encouraged to bring a canned food donation for The Open Door truck, to support a good cause while enjoying the festivities. For convenience, additional parking is available at Oak Hills Church.
