East Arlington residents can join the forefront of delivery innovation and receive free groceries as part of a pilot program testing the efficiency of autonomous deliveries. The City of Arlington is conducting the Multimodal Delivery Pilot Program funded by a $780,182 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, with partnership from local organizations like Tarrant Area Food Bank and The University of Texas at Arlington. A successful first round of deliveries was completed in September of last year.

The intent of the two-year study is to strategically and efficiently test using zero-emission or low-emission uncrewed vehicles to deliver essential goods. It aims to address the needs of those who are mobility challenged or live in historically disadvantaged areas without reliable transportation. According to an announcement by the City of Arlington, the deliveries will try to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while serving those in need.

To participate in the upcoming delivery window, residents must live within the specified East Arlington area and be available to receive their groceries during the week of May 12-16, 2025. Delivery vehicles include Aerialoop’s ALT6-4 VTOL Delivery aircraft, capable of carrying up to nine pounds, and Mozee’s electric, autonomous vehicle that can transport both passengers and cargo. Ensuring access to this program, the City has provided a service area map for prospective participants on its website.

Interested parties should visit the Arlington city website by next Monday to sign up and get more information on the project. The city and its partners, including Airspace Link, Aerialoop, Mozee, and others, are actively seeking recipients for at least 150 food boxes. These will be distributed from Tarrant Area Food bank to chosen neighborhoods. City staff will closely coordinate delivery times with participants after the sign-up process is complete.
