As Memorial Day approaches, the Veterans Memorial in Purgatory Creek Park prepares for the annual ceremony, an event deeply rooted in honoring those who have risked all in the U.S. Armed Forces.
With the ceremonious day nearing, the Eden Prairie community is called upon to participate actively. Nominations are being accepted for veterans deserving of recognition at the 2025 ceremony, sparking community engagement. It's an opportunity to shine a spotlight, though such a gesture can never fully repay their sacrifices. According to the city's announcement, to nominate a veteran, there is a simple process that must be completed by Tuesday, May 6.
The eligibility criteria are specific for nominees; they must be tightly woven into the Eden Prairie fabric, co-opting connections that bind them to the community. In addition, nominees must have been honorably discharged from service or are active-duty service members or deceased military personnel who are considered in good standing — a gesture that echoes the respect and honor we wish to bestow.
Recognition for the chosen veteran is not a solitary affair. The nominator, thrust into a position of honor much like the voice of the community, is given the privilege to articulate the veteran's service story during the ceremony. As reported by the city's official communication, the individual who nominates the selected vet is "invited to share a few words about their nominee's service during the ceremony." A poignant moment, to be sure, as it allows personal histories to enter the collective consciousness of gratitude and memory.
