Edmond Electric is partnering with Edmond Urban Forestry and The Arbor Day Foundation for the Energy-Saving Trees Program. This program offers residents the chance to receive a free tree, aimed at conserving energy and reducing utility costs. An online tool is available to help residents choose the best location to plant their tree for energy efficiency. According to the City of Edmond, the program has distributed 3,135 trees, resulting in a 4.0 million kWh reduction in energy use.
Starting at 8 a.m. on April 7, residents can reserve one of the 225 trees available. The tree species offered include Burgundy Hearts Redbud, Northern Red Oak, Shoal Creek Chaste Tree, Stanley Plum, Catalpa, and Wisconsin Weeping Willow. To help with the selection, Edmond Electric has provided a mapping tool on the Arbor Day Foundation’s website. Reservations can be made through the link, allowing homeowners to choose trees that best support their energy-saving needs, as reported by the City of Edmond.
Residents who reserved a tree can pick it up at Bickham-Rudkin Park, located at 33rd Street & S. Rankin Street, from 2 to 6 p.m. on April 10 and April 11. The pickup will be done through a drive-through format, and staff will load the trees into vehicles. A small SUV or truck is recommended, and it’s suggested to bring a trash bag to protect the vehicle from soil. Each household can pick up one tree, and a proxy can pick up the tree with the reservation name and confirmation details, as stated by the City of Edmond.
