El Paso Community College (EPCC) is cutting a fresh path through the traditional education landscape with its Tejano Flex program, centering on Competency-Based Education (CBE). In partnership with D2L Brightspace, EPCC hosted a webinar in early April, breaking down the benefits and logistics of a CBE approach to education. CBE is gaining traction as it ditches the old sticking points of seat-time in favor of skills mastery, a major win for nontraditional learners who are trying to juggle the circus act of work, life, and education.
In step with this modern take on learning, EPCC is making it its business to tackle the barriers that often sideline adult learners and those with less elastic schedules. Offering 65 CBE courses and eight degree plans entirely within the CBE framework, they're not just talking the talk. According to EPCC CBE Project Director Fernando Mata, "We have 65 CBE courses developed, and eight degree plans that can be completed entirely in the CBE modality." Mata continues to declare, "Through our partnership with D2L Brightspace, we are able to offer a more personalized, student-centered approach that empowers learners to move at their own pace, acquire critical skills, and ultimately achieve their career and academic goals," as per EPCC News.
With CBE's spotlight on applied knowledge, students can flex their muscles on prior experience to speed through material they've already mastered, tuning into the essentials needed to succeed in today's ever-changing job market. The webinar attendees received an in-depth look at how D2L Brightspace, a key player in the learning management game, supports and scales CBE programs like EPCC's, promising a runway to in-demand careers and higher education that's both streamlined and efficient.
EPCC is hitching its wagon to the future with a mission to reimagine the essence of higher education through the innovative lens of technology and ingenuity. This is more than a nice concept; it's a heavy-lifting initiative that puts high-impact, yet affordable education in the hands of those who need it most. The Tejano Flex initiative, as highlighted by EPCC News, swings wide the doors to equitable learning opportunities, preparing a broad swath of students for success in today's and tomorrow's job market.
