In a somber event that sought to honor and remember victims of crime, El Paso County Sheriff Oscar Ugarte and District Attorney James Montoya led the Reading of Names Ceremony this week. The ceremony, marking National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, provides a space for remembrance and solidarity for those affected by violence and loss. According to El Paso County Sheriff Oscar Ugarte, they "remembered and honored those whose lives were tragically taken, and stood in solidarity with survivors and families who carry their memory every day."
During the event, names of victims from the El Paso area were read aloud, a tradition that puts individual stories at the forefront of the community's consciousness. By focusing on the human toll, the ceremony serves as a poignant reminder of the personal dimensions of crime statistics, a reminder that beyond the numbers lie real people who have suffered deeply.
Additionally, the ceremony provides an opportunity for community members to connect and to receive support. Such events are essential to ensure that victims' rights remain a priority in both the judicial process and society at large. In his post, District Attorney Montoya also pledged his continued support for those affected, emphasizing the need to "stand in solidarity with survivors and families" as a way to justly acknowledge and address their experiences.
