In what seems to be an increasing effort to combat environmental violations, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office has once again cracked down on illegal dumping in the East El Paso desert area. This latest incident, involving two individuals who treated the desert like their personal landfill, as detailed by El Paso County Sheriff Oscar Ugarte. Last Tuesday, deputies on patrol observed suspicious activity unfolding near the 4000 block of Acacia Dr.

Employing surveillance tactics, the deputies watched a white Chevrolet Colorado as it meandered into the desert landscape, driven by what would turn out to be two violators of our shared natural spaces. During their watch, they saw a woman and a man, later identified as 60-year-old Lucia Villa and her 32-year-old son, Fernando Villa, beginning to offload trash. Acting with alacrity, the deputies detained the pair and the vehicle, disrupting what was an illegal act of disposal.

"Deputies swiftly intervened, detaining both individuals and securing the vehicle involved," El Paso County Sheriff Oscar Ugarte mentioned, capturing the decisive moment. The Villas, now facing charges of illegal dumping, were booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility as a result of actions that stand to harm both the ecosystem and community health.
