El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) is taking definitive steps towards amplifying its students' educational journey by extending the highly regarded Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program to additional schools. According to El Paso ISD, after observing encouraging outcomes from the program's implementation at Charles and Guillen Middle Schools, EPISD is introducing AVID to Charles Q. Murphree PK-8, Don Haskins PK-8, and Richardson Middle School starting the 2025–26 academic year.

Striving for substantial coverage, AVID is slated to expand to three more middle and PK-8 campuses annually, with ambitions for district-wide adoption. Through this program, students are exposed to an environment fostering not just academic prowess but also personal growth, a strategy aligned with the district's holistic "whole-child approach." "At El Paso ISD we continually evaluate and evolve our programs to ensure we are meeting the needs of every learner," said Superintendent Diana Sayavedra, as per El Paso ISD. AVID's personalized touch digs deep, cultivating a bedrock of essential skills like critical thinking and effective communication.

With the decision to phase out the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme, a move driven by falling enrollments and limited reach, the district reaffirms its commitment to programs with impactful returns. Nationwide, AVID's statistics paint an awe-inspiring picture: a surge in four-year college enrollments by 20% nationally, and within Texas, a striking 78% of AVID students are applying with a 92% acceptance rate to four-year colleges.

El Paso ISD's pivot to AVID illustrates an intention to create strong academic and leadership fundamentals within its student population. As Sayavedra adds, "It empowers students to see what’s possible—and gives them the support to achieve it," as obtained by El Paso ISD. With remarkable average GPA stand at 3.5 for high school seniors in Texas participating in AVID, El Paso ISD's energy is clearly directed towards sustaining academic excellence and equipping scholars for a promising future.
