With the arrival of warmer weather, El Paso's hiking enthusiasts are lacing up their boots and heading for the hills, but the El Paso Police Department is stepping in with a friendly PSA: Hike smart to stay safe. The city's trails are scenic gems, but they aren’t without their risks. El Paso PD's Combined Search And Rescue (COMSAR) team, a unit trained to tackle outdoor emergencies, emphasizes preparedness as the key to a safe hiking experience.
The advice from the COMSAR team is straightforward, a mix of common sense and caution. "Dress for the conditions. Wear sturdy footwear and dress in layers," as stated by the El Paso Police Department. Layering up and sporting solid hiking boots can make the difference between a great day out and one filled with discomfort, or worse. Their tips don't stop at dressing appropriately, of course: Sun protection is crucial, as are a charged-up GPS and enough water to combat dehydration.
Hikers are advised to "Know your route," a sage piece of guidance for anyone venturing into the great outdoors. Trailblazers should carry a map or GPS device and ensure that all electronics are fully charged before setting out on their adventure. It's also recommended to stay hydrated by bringing at least 1 liter of water for every 2 hours of activity. And what's a hike without snacks? Packing extra treats is suggested as well. Essentials like a flashlight and a basic first aid kit could be lifesavers in an emergency.
Even for the most intrepid explorers, the EPPD insists on sticking to marked trails. Off-path adventures might seem tempting, but they advise against it. "Share your plan," the team says, advocating for safety nets like informing someone about your itinerary and expected return time. After all, in the remote swath of wilderness, cell service may be as scarce as a desert bloom. And as for wildlife, encounters are rare, but respecting the local fauna from a distance is best; nobody wants a snakebite spoiling their day after all.
