An hours-long standoff in Elyria came to a close after a suspect, identified as 46-year-old Dominic Marian, was taken into police custody yesterday afternoon. The situation, which involved allegations of federal probation violations on Marian's part, required residents in the vicinity of Boston Avenue and South Logan Street to shelter in place as law enforcement officials, including the Elyria Police Department and U.S. Marshals, responded to the scene. In a statement obtained by WKYC, the Elyria police praised the efforts of their Patrol Division, Detective Bureau, Dispatchers, Crisis Negotiators, and the Special Response Team for their work in "managing the scene, keeping the public safe and taking this dangerous fugitive into custody peacefully and professionally."
According to reports from WKYC, the standoff began around 7:45 a.m. on Friday as U.S. Marshals attempted to serve a warrant at a residence on South Logan Street. Marian reportedly barricaded himself in a detached garage and was believed to be armed. Initially, a woman left the home voluntarily with Marian in the early stages of the incident, and no additional individuals were inside. The nearby Eastern Heights Campus of the Elyria City School District was placed under a modified lockout as a precautionary measure. Police continued to try to negotiate a peaceful surrender, eventually leading Marian to apparently decide to end the standoff and surrender around 1 p.m., as mentioned in FOX 8's coverage.
During the tense situation, locals were asked to stay indoors as roads were blocked for a police operation. Police thought Marian had two handguns and possibly a rifle, making the situation more dangerous. More charges beyond federal probation violations are expected, but details are unavailable. Law enforcement aims to keep the community safe and end the crisis without more problems.
