Former Fort Bend County Judge staffer Taral Patel has accepted a plea deal for creating fake social media accounts, aimed at promoting his and his superior's political campaigns through deception. Patel, who was beaten in the November 2024 election by Andy Meyers, pled guilty to two misdemeanors: misrepresentation of identity by a candidate, and his plea included an admission of committing one of the counts with the knowledge of Fort Bend County Judge KP George, his former boss, CW39 reported.
In a move that skirted potential incarceration, Patel agreed to a two-year deferred adjudication probation. His judgement includes directives to serve 400 hours of community service, donate $2,000 to Fort Bend Partnership for Youth, and issue written apologies to his victims and the community at large, according to Click2Houston. If Patel adheres to the court's conditions, the charges could be dismissed after the probation period.
Patel's acknowledgment of guilt extended to his online impersonation, with prosecutors indicating that he forged social media personas to levy racial attacks tailored to garner voter sympathy and deface other candidates. This premeditated scheme, which unfolded on platforms like Facebook, was traced back to Patel through subpoenaed records from technology companies, such as Meta Platforms and Google, as per Click2Houston.
"Today, I ask you for grace and kindness. Even if it’s not deserved, I ask for your forgiveness," Patel stated, signifying a measure of regret for his actions, which now compel him to collaborate in potential future legal proceedings against Judge George, CW39 detailed. George, who denies any involvement in the fiasco, has faced his own legal battles, including charges for two felony counts of money laundering as cited in court records.
Fort Bend County District Attorney Brian Middleton weighed in on the case, underscoring the resolve for justice, "Justice and accountability were achieved today when Taral Patel accepted responsibility and pled guilty to the offenses," as reported by CW39. The plea bargain is believed to represent fairness for all parties affected, allowing community healing to ensue.
