A predawn traffic stop in Galena Park turned into a deadly police chase early Saturday, ending with a gray Infiniti crashed near the 7200 block of Clinton Drive and a young Hispanic man dead in the passenger seat. The driver ran from the wreck on foot and, as of Saturday morning, had not been found.
According to Click2Houston, Galena Park police were conducting traffic enforcement around 3 a.m. in the 7700 block of Clinton Drive when an officer spotted the Infiniti traveling over the speed limit and attempted to make a stop. Instead of pulling over, the driver accelerated, and officers began a pursuit that continued toward the 7400 block of Clinton Drive. At one point, the officer briefly lost sight of the car before finding evidence of a crash.
The Infiniti lost control during the chase in the 7400 block of Clinton Drive, and officers ultimately located it stopped near the 7200 block. Inside, they found a young Hispanic man dead in the passenger seat. Evidence at the scene indicated he was not the one driving, the outlet reports, meaning whoever was behind the wheel left him there and ran.
Flock Cameras and Ground-Level Leads
Investigators are now using Flock Safety license plate reader technology to try to identify the driver who fled, per the same account. Public records show that municipal and educational security agencies in the Galena Park area rely on this automated camera network, which logs vehicle attributes and timestamps in real time across local roads, according to Atlas of Surveillance. Police say they have developed some leads but have not identified or located a suspect.

A Small Industrial City Confronting a Deadly Pattern
Galena Park is a roughly 5-square-mile industrial city along the Houston Ship Channel with about 10,500 residents, per the Texas Municipal League. The case adds to a run of recent violent incidents in the small community; Galena Park leaders imposed updated public park rules and curfews in April after a fatal shooting at a local basketball court, according to FOX 26 Houston.
The chase also lands amid broader scrutiny of pursuit policy in the region. A 2020 study of federal traffic safety data found Harris County led all U.S. counties in fatal police pursuit crashes between 2014 and 2018, with 43 total pursuit-related deaths, according to the Fine Law Firm. A 2025 investigation of Harris County constable pursuit logs by Houston Landing found that traffic violations were the initial reason behind more than 300 high-speed chases over three years in a single local precinct. National guidelines issued in 2023 by the Police Executive Research Forum and the U.S. Department of Justice recommend that officers avoid high-speed chases over routine traffic infractions unless the fleeing driver poses an imminent violent threat.
What the Driver Could Face
Once identified and apprehended, the driver could face serious criminal exposure under Texas law. Fleeing from a police officer in a vehicle in a way that results in another person's death during the pursuit is a second-degree felony under Texas Penal Code § 38.04, carrying two to 20 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000. Separately, Texas Transportation Code § 550.021 makes it a second-degree felony, also punishable by two to 20 years, for a driver involved in a fatal collision to fail to stop, check on the injured, and remain at the scene.
Investigators have not said how the passenger sustained his fatal injuries, whether they occurred during the crash itself, or whether the driver knew he was dead before running.
