Fort Worth Animal Care & Control (FWACC) has revived dog adoptions at its PetSmart Everyday Adoption Centers, a cheerful turn for dog lovers and four-legged friends alike. The announcement follows a brief suspension due to health concerns, with the centers bouncing back, ready to pair eligible canines with eager adopters. According to an official update from the City of Fort Worth, dogs from the Silcox shelter that have cleared rigorous health checks are now available again.
FWACC's pause resulted from vigilant disease control, especially against the canine distemper virus. Now, with each dog carrying at least one negative test for distemper, a minimum of 21 days under FWACC's care, and two rounds of vaccinations inclusive of boosters, families can adopt with confidence. As noted by the city announcement, a "clean bill of health from the veterinary staff" has to accompany every dog before transfer to PetSmart's adoption centers, reflecting an unyielding commitment to animal and community health, even after briefly halting the adoptions.
The restrictive measures, although a momentary obstacle for adoption activities haven't dampened the enthusiasm with which the FWACC staff is moving cautiously ahead with the adoptions. As per the announcement from the city, adoption processing for applications placed before the closure on March 24th has now resumed. Furthermore, rescue partners have been greenlit to tag animals poised for transfer, injecting a sense of normalcy.
However, the North Animal Campus and Silcox Adoption Center, which have been closed to the public and volunteers, remain off-limits as the canine distemper virus is monitored closely by the staff. Notwithstanding, the forward movement on adoptions at the satellite PetSmart Hulen and PetSmart Alliance locations is casting a hopeful light on the path to recovery for the FWACC services. As the public has been advised, those interested in adopting should visit these two locales to find their potential new family member.
