Gatlinburg streets witnessed a mesh of determination and remembrance this weekend as runners took to the pavement for the 2025 Mountain Man Memorial March. The event, aimed at honoring the fallen, kicked off early yesterday morning from Pi Beta Phi Elementary School and wound its way through town, causing a series of lane closures along the route. The Gatlinburg Police Department had issued a traffic advisory the day before, alerting citizens and visitors alike to the temporary travel restrictions.

The race, which includes both a half marathon and a full marathon, began at the elementary school, made it's way to Traffic Light No. 6 and continued along Parkway to Traffic Light No. 8. According to their social media post, "Runners will then turn onto Airport Road, proceeding the full distance to the intersection of Cherokee Orchard Road." From this point, participants followed Cherokee Orchard Road to Baskins Creek Bypass, then onto East Parkway, and eventually, after many a stride, returned to the starting point via the sidewalks along East Parkway. Motorists found themselves sharing the road with these resolute athletes, particularly along East Parkway where lane closures remained in effect between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m.

Despite the challenges of coordinating such a event, Gatlinburg Police ensured a smooth execution with their clear communication and strategic planning. Drivers were advised to be especially cautious after 9 a.m. as runners participating in the race transitioned onto the sidewalks. The mapped lane closure details gave locals and tourists the opportunity to navigate the disruptions with minimal inconvenience.
