Germantown's Bo Mills has officially retired after a robust 40-year career serving the city's Public Works department. Germantown-TN.gov recently announced Mills' departure, stating that he began his tenure in 1985 and ultimately ascended to the role of Public Works Director in 2004. Known for his tireless commitment to community service, Mills' contributions include advocating for, among other initiatives, the construction of Germantown's second elevated water tank on Forest Hill Irene Road.
During his career, Mills steadily worked to quickly rise through the departmental ranks, having first been hired as a backhoe operator/crew supervisor. His hands-on experience and academic background—he holds a degree in Public Administration from the University of Tennessee at Martin—enabled him to influence many facets of the city’s operations, including waste coordination and environmental services. According to his own words, obtained by germantown-tn.gov, Mills found great reward in "supporting the provision of basic quality of life services."
Mills' dedication didn't go unnoticed. Mayor Mike Palazzolo was quoted praising Mills' service, saying, "Bo Mills is the embodiment of what it means to serve with excellence." Mills has also been an active member of the American Public Works Association (APWA) since 1989 and was honored as one of the Top 10 Public Works Leaders of the Year in 2023, a high accolade in the public works industry.
Outside his professional life, Mills invested in the community, including church leadership roles and the Keep Tipton County Clean campaign. Not planning to slowly ease into retirement, Mills looks forward to jumping right in on family projects and outdoor activities, as well as beginning a helping hands ministry for widows in his community. "My wife has several projects for me right off the bat," he told germantown-tn.gov.
As Bo Mills steps into this next phase of life, his work in Germantown endures, marking a period of growth and dedication to public infrastructure.
