In an effort to bolster Texas' commitment to workforce development, Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Aida Coronado and Bobby Smith to the Texas Workforce Investment Council. Announced earlier this month, their terms are set to end on September 1. Texas is aiming to enhance its collaborative strategies for workforce programs through the council's oversight which, according to the Office of the Texas Governor, engages in "planning, evaluation, research, and other functions related to 19 workforce programs."
Aida Coronado, a Brownsville local and the executive vice president and chief operations officer for DHR Health Brownsville, brings a substantial healthcare background to the table. As stated by the Office of the Texas Governor, Coronado is vested with experience beyond management. Working as a family nurse practitioner, she is also the chairman of Advanced Practice Providers Process Improvement and represents the DHR Medical Executive Committee. A decorated servicemember, she was honorably discharged from the United States Public Health Service and holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from UT Rio Grande Valley and a Master of Science in Nursing from Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi.
Bobby Smith of Buda is expected to bring a strong organized labor perspective to the council. Having faithfully served as a business representative for United Association Local 286, his experience spans teaching EPRI Industrial Rigging at Local 286, and representing labor as a delegate for the Central Texas Labor Council. Smith, a parishioner actively attending Saint Ignatius Martyr Catholic Church and sponsor at Outdoor Christian Ministries, completed an apprenticeship with Local 286 focusing on plumbing, pipefitting, and welding, as reported by the Office of the Texas Governor.
