Texas Governor Greg Abbott has made new appointments to the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners, a move that is stirring conversations among social workers and health care professionals across the state. In a decision announced yesterday, Abbott appointed Jason Bernal, David Marsden, and reappointed Jennifer Swords to terms that will extend through February 1, 2031. Their roles will involve the rigorous task of regulating the practice of social work within the state.
The first of the appointees, Jason Bernal hails from New Braunfels and carries a title of business development manager at Resolute Baptist Hospital. His resume includes affiliations like the American College of Healthcare Executives, and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society. According to the Governor's press release, Bernal has academic credentials that read a Bachelor of Science in Sociology from Colorado State University, and a Master of Healthcare Administration from the University of the Incarnate Word.
David Marsden of Weatherford, on the other hand, is directly rooted in social work as a practitioner at Cook Children’s Medical Center. Marsden comes in with memberships in the National Association of Social Workers, and the Commission for Case Management Certification. His academic foundation includes a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Howard Payne University and a Master of Science in Social Work from The University of Texas at Arlington.
Last among the appointees but maintaining her position on the board, Jennifer Swords of Bedford will continue her work. She is a Licensed Baccalaureate Social Worker, and program manager at Communities in Schools of Greater Tarrant County, a role that likely provides her with firsthand insight into the state's social needs and challenges. Swords' educational background is intimately connected with the field as well, as she holds a Bachelor of Social Work from Stephen F. Austin State University.
