In a recent move to bolster the bench strength of the Massachusetts Superior Court, Governor Maura Healey has tapped two legal professionals from Western Massachusetts for the role of Associate Justices. The nominees are Judge Charles W. Groce, III and Attorney Jeffrey Trapani, both of whom carry substantial legal expertise and are now awaiting confirmation from the Governor’s Council.
"Both of these nominees are exceptional stewards of justice. Over the course of their respective careers, they've been able to bring empathy and consideration to the Court while delivering for the people of Western Massachusetts," Governor Healey stated. The affirmation process undertaken by the Governor’s Council is a step that precedes their final appointment.
The responsibilities bestowed upon the Superior Court are wide-ranging, with jurisdiction over severe criminal cases, civil actions where the stakes are north of $50,000, as well as labor disputes and medical malpractice tribunals. The Superior Court is respected for delivering justice with speed and upholding the dignity of the legal process.
Judge Groce, who currently presides as the First Justice of the Westfield District Court, has a notable background in criminal defense and education, serving as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Attorney Trapani brings a vast experience in the defense of personal injury, employment discrimination, and civil rights claims, according to the Governor's press release. Both nominees embody an extensive legal career and a dedication to public service.
With these nominations, Healey continues her series of judicial appointments aimed at enhancing the competency and empathy within Massachusetts' courts. The additions of Groce and Trapani to the previous nominations are expected to further the court's commitment to fairness and justice across all counties in the state.
