Residents of Grosse Ile and the surrounding communities are looking at a lengthy detour come May, as the Grosse Ile Parkway Bridge is set for an eight-week closure to undergo vital structural steel repairs. According to an official announcement on April 16, disclosed by the ClickOnDetroit, the Wayne County Department of Public Services will shut down the bridge to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic starting at 7 a.m. on Thursday, May 1, 2025.
The peninsula's primary free crossing will be off-limits until the work is completed, potentially affecting the daily commutes, the bridge which will also not be operational for marine traffic during the repair period, and all motorized travel will need to be diverted to the Grosse Ile Toll Bridge, as noted by the same release. For commuters needing alternative routes, eastbound drivers are instructed to go from W. Jefferson Avenue, turn right onto Bridge Road, then right onto Meridian Road and keep straight to Grosse Ile Parkway, while those heading west from Grosse Ile Parkway should make a left onto Meridian Road, then left onto Bridge Road, and finally a left onto W. Jefferson Avenue, this information was confirmed by a Detroit Free Press report.
The bridge's shutdown comes hot on the heels of Wayne County's finalized purchase of the Grosse Ile Toll Bridge, a strategic move backed by an island voter-approved special millage five months prior, as detailed by a Detroit News article. Anticipating potential questions and concerns from the public, Wayne County Department of Public Services has encouraged individuals to reach out to their 24-hour customer service center at 888-762-3273 for further assistance.
Officials are asking drivers to follow detour signs, allow extra travel time, and plan ahead, as delays are expected during peak construction hours. Toll bridge fees can be found on the township’s website—helpful for residents who aren’t used to paying to travel into the rest of Wayne County. "Wayne County Department of Public Services appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as we work to complete these important infrastructure improvements safely and efficiently," a sentiment shared across the reports on the upcoming bridge work, as per ClickOnDetroit.
