Chaos briefly erupted at Freedom Elementary School in Buckeye on Wednesday afternoon when a fight involving four individuals, one armed with a gun, led to a significant police response. According to a report by FOX 10 Phoenix, the Buckeye Police detained four people: a 15-year-old, two 17-year-olds, and a 19-year-old, Iriel Rivera, the individual allegedly in possession of the firearm.
The incident, which unfolded shortly before 4:00 p.m. as students were being dismissed, seems to have been sparked as some involved parties were there to pick up relatives from the school. It has yet to be confirmed whether Rivera's gun was loaded. As the tensions rose, "Iriel Rivera, lifted his shirt to show the handgun that was tucked in his waistband," in a gesture that surely to escalate the situation, the report says.
Rivera now faces multiple weapons charges, according to authorities. The other individuals involved, none of whom were students at the elementary school, as was originally claimed by police, will face charges of disorderly conduct and disrupting an educational institution. No injuries were reported from the altercation.
In a statement obtained by AZ Family, law enforcement described the scene as "very chaotic" that was "quickly contained thanks to a community that is vigilant and called 911." This speaks to the rapid response of both the community and law enforcement to calmly de-escalate what could have been a more dangerous confrontation.
