Hawai‘i Island police have had their hands full with DUI incidents during last Monday through Sunday, arresting 16 drivers suspected of operating vehicles under the influence. Seven of these incidents resulted in traffic collisions, and one involved a driver under the age of 21. The ongoing trend shows a slight uptick in DUI arrests, with this year's figures reaching 294 compared to 287 during the same timeframe last year — a 2.44 percent increase in such arrests, according to the Hawaii Police Department's recent report.
These DUI arrests have occurred amidst 310 major crashes reported so far in 2025, slightly more than the 302 crashes documented by this same date in 2024. This year, fatal crashes have decreased with 10 reported incidents leading to 11 deaths, which, represent a decrease from the previous year that saw 13 fatal crashes, and 15 fatalities. Despite the grim nature of these statistics, officials note that there have been no non-traffic fatalities either this year or the last within the same period.
Hawai‘i Police Department's Traffic Services Section is taking action by maintaining DUI roadblocks and patrols across the island to curb impaired driving.
