As the Easter festivities gear up and the 62nd annual Merrie Monarch Festival draws near, the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) is issuing a travel advisory for those heading to airports across the state. According to an announcement on the department's website, travelers are encouraged to plan ahead for heavier-than-usual traffic during the week of April 20-26. Both events are expected to significantly increase the number of passengers at Hawai‘i's five busiest airports, particularly with the influx of Hilo-bound festival-goers.
Preparations at Hilo International Airport are in full swing, with the HDOT stating that coordination with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has been prioritized to manage the expected surge. Technicians have been positioned strategically, prepared to address any potential technical hiccups with the screening equipment. Added to the mix, extra staffing for passenger screening and canine units for baggage checks will be brought in to handle any issues that travelers may face.
To mitigate the anticipated stress of travel during this busy period, HDOT offers several tips. They advise travelers to arrive at the airport at least two hours before their flight departure, ensuring there's ample time to park, check in, and navigate through security. Passengers are also advised to stay on top of their flight's status, including any potential delays or changes to gate assignments and baggage claim areas, especially those picking up arriving guests.
With the expected parking crunch, catching a ride to the airport might be the wisest move for travelers. For those who decide to drive themselves, early arrival is suggested to secure a spot. HDOT points out that airport public parking rates are capped at a 24-hour maximum of $24, but with an important caveat—some lots are a trek away from the main terminal so travelers should account for the extra time needed to reach the ticket lobbies HDOT advises.
