The Hillsborough County Board of Commissioners recently honored Tampa General Hospital for becoming the #1 hospital in the nation for organ transplants by volume, a title earned in 2024. Dr. Benjamin Mackie, leader of the Heart Transplant Center, accepted the award on behalf of the hospital team.
According to the Hillsborough County release, Tampa General Hospital has performed over 13,000 adult solid organ transplants, including the state's first successful heart transplant in 1985. In 2024, the hospital set a national record with 889 transplants. Dr. Mackie credited the success to the entire team, stating, "We have hundreds of team members that participate in the care of transplant patients at Tampa General. And everybody plays an integral role in making that happen."
In addition to recognizing the hospital’s achievement, the commissioners declared April as Donate Life Month to encourage organ donation. They also presented the 2025 Theodore Roosevelt Hillsborough Forever Conservation Award to Michael S. Flannery for his work as a chief environmental scientist.
