Hillsborough County is calling out to its citizens for feedback on stormwater management in the wake of Hurricanes Debby, Helene, and Milton, as well as other heavy rain incidents from 2024. Residents are invited to share their experiences of the storms' effects on property, roads, and commerce during a series of eight public meetings. The aim is to assess the aggregate damage and to discuss potential regional flood mitigation and resilience strategies.
The county has hired an external engineering firm to conduct a comprehensive independent review of the stormwater system's performance under last year's severe weather conditions. Experiencing the high water first-hand, the residents' insights will prove invaluable in this next phase, assessing how the community was impacted. According to Hillsborough County's statement, public meetings are scheduled across the county, with locations chosen for their proximity to the most affected zones.
Aside from the face-to-face sessions, a digital platform will also be available. Interested parties can visit the Hillsborough County Education & Engagement Hub between April 15 and May 19 to learn more about the assessment and submit feedback. The sessions in April will take place in various districts, with the first meeting set for the Town 'N Country / Pinecrest area on April 15 at Pierce Middle School.
Riverview Library and Carrollwood Cultural Center will host meetings on April 22 and April 23, respectively, discussing the status of the District 3 - Progress Village / Riverview area and District 2 - Brushy Creek communities. Later in April, the conversation will move to Plant City where locals can join the dialogue at Plant City High School on April 29. Each event aims to educate attendees on the stormwater assessment process and actively seeks their contributions.
As May arrives, so do further opportunities to participate, with meetings in South Tampa, University Area, Northdale, and South County. These will round out the series, providing various times and locations to ensure maximum accessibility. The South Tampa meeting will be held at Jan Kaminis Platt Library on May 7, and the UACDC will be the meeting point for University Area locals on May 12. For those in Northdale and South County, Jimmie Keel Public Library and Lennard High School open their doors on May 15 and 19, respectively. For all the dates, times, and details, citizens are encouraged to refer to the Hillsborough County website.
