The Hawai‘i Police Department is currently seeking the public’s help to gather more information about a major traffic collision that occurred in South Hilo earlier this month. According to the department, the incident took place at the intersection of Kamehameha Avenue and Manono Street on the morning of April 3.

Officials were called to the scene at 9:34 a.m. after reports of the accident came through. The collision involved a newly minted 2024 Chevrolet Silverado, a police vehicle operating under subsidy, and a seasoned 2015 Lexus SUV. It appears that the Silverado was moving east on Kamehameha Avenue direction when it struck the Lexus, which was attempting to cross south onto Manono Street, resulting in a broadside impact. The force of the collision was such that it left to disable both vehicles in the heart of the intersection.

As per the official report, the responding officer sustained minor injuries and was promptly taken care of at Hilo Benioff Medical Center. The Lexus was occupied by a 62-year-old woman and a 3-year-old child at the time of the incident. Emergency responders transported them to the same hospital, where the woman was treated for minor lacerations and a fractured rib, while the child received attention for minor scrapes and bruises.

The investigative teams, specifically the Area I Traffic Enforcement Unit and the Office of Professional Standards, are thoroughly examining the circumstances behind the crash and are actively seeking witnesses. They are asking anyone who might have directly seen the collision to immediately come forward to assist with providing necessary insights.
