The Houston Health Department confirmed a case of measles in an unvaccinated traveler who passed through Hobby Airport last Sunday. The individual, arriving from Mexico, was in multiple areas of the airport between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., potentially exposing others to the virus.
Health officials are advising individuals who were at Hobby Airport last sunday, to monitor their health and contact their healthcare provider if concerned about possible measles exposure. Dr. David Persse, Chief Medical Officer for the City of Houston, stated, "If you were at Hobby Airport on March 30, 2025, between 4–8 p.m. and are concerned about possible exposure, please call your primary care provider before seeking in-person healthcare." Measles symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash. The virus is highly contagious and spreads through the air. "Do not visit an emergency room unless you are experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, or a rash and have called ahead to allow them to prepare for your arrival," Dr. Persse added, as reported by KHOU.
Houston has reported its first case of measles, with Harris County confirming a case in a child and West Texas experiencing an outbreak of nearly 500 cases. Dr. Persse stated, "The best protection against measles is vaccination. Measles can lead to serious complications, especially in young children and those with weakened immune systems. We urge everyone to check their immunization status and ensure they are up to date," according to Click2Houston.
