Houston is set to pay tribute to one of its most storied athletes and entrepreneurs with a celebration of life for George Foreman on Monday, April 14. The late boxing champion, who passed away on March 21 at the age of 76, will be honored at the Wortham Theater, as per a statement from Houston Mayor John Whitmire. The iconic heavyweight was not only a ferocious presence in the ring but later became known for his successful business ventures, particularly the George Foreman Grill—which sold more than 100 million units worldwide, as reported by KHOU.
In lieu of flowers, Foreman's family has requested that donations be made to the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ or the George Foreman Charitable Foundation. According to KHOU, the family described him as "a devout preacher, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grand- and great-grandfather." His life was characterized by "unwavering faith, humility, and purpose," and he was a "humanitarian, an Olympian and two-time heavyweight champion of the world," deeply respected across various spheres for his discipline, conviction, and efforts to preserve his good name for his family.
Foreman's journey from the streets of Houston's Fifth Ward to the pinnacle of boxing, with an Olympic gold beneath his belt and the heavyweight title atop, is an integral part of his legend. He infamously lost his belt to Muhammad Ali in the "Rumble in the Jungle," before making a remarkable comeback at age 45 to reclaim the heavyweight championship. His transformation into a cherished public figure was highlighted by his stints as a genial spokesperson and actor, as per KHOU.
The memorial service starts at 10:45 a.m., and will provide an opportunity for fans, friends, and family to remember Foreman's varied and impactful life. "George was a great friend to not only myself, but to my entire family," Top Rank president Bob Arum shared, a sentiment echoed by an outpouring of tributes from all corners following the announcement of his passing, as reported by KHOU. According to an article from ABC13, Foreman, a native Texan, began his boxing career as an Olympic gold medalist and escalated to the heavyweight division by stopping Joe Frazier in 1973. The Wortham Theater, a locus for arts and culture in downtown Houston, will be the gathering place to bid farewell to this storied citizen and international icon.
