The Honolulu Police Department has increased its safety efforts in response to a rise in pedestrian fatalities on Oahu. According to the Honolulu Police Department, there were eight pedestrian deaths in the first quarter of 2025. This number is nearly half of the total 19 pedestrian deaths reported in all of 2024. "This is alarming," said Maj. James Slayter, Traffic Division commander.

To address a recent rise in pedestrian-related incidents, the Traffic Division conducted 18 pedestrian-safety operations in March. The operations took place in high-traffic areas and focused on education, warnings, and enforcement. During these efforts, officers issued approximately 300 warnings and 897 citations for various violations, including jaywalking and distracted driving. “We all need to prioritize safety. Both drivers and pedestrians should be vigilant, obey traffic signals and signs, and make eye contact,” said Maj. Slayter, as reported by the Honolulu Police Department.

The Honolulu Police Department arrested eight drivers for impaired driving, two for driving without a license, and one person with an outstanding warrant during a recent traffic enforcement effort. Officers also issued citations for crossing against signals and failing to yield to pedestrians. In an Honolulu Police Department statement, Maj. Slayter said, “We hope that everyone will slow down, pay attention and look out for each other.” The enforcement is part of ongoing efforts to reduce traffic-related injuries and deaths on Oahu.
