Change is coming to downtown Huntersville, and it's starting with the streets. After two decades of planning and construction, the Main Street Improvements project has reached a point where new street names are in order to accommodate the updated traffic patterns and the town's growth. According to a recent announcement from the Town of Huntersville, a couple of stretches of Main Street are getting a makeover in the form of new names to guide residents and visitors through downtown with greater ease.
The shift comes in response to the decision to avoid expanding NC115 into a four-lane road through the heart of Huntersville. Instead, Main Street has been transformed into a parallel route to manage the north-south traffic flow around one of the town’s busiest intersections at Gilead and NC-115. The new infrastructure includes two roundabouts on NC-115: one at Fourth Street and the other at Mount Holly-Huntersville Road, these have served as an alternate route for NC 115 traffic, according to an official statement from the Town of Huntersville's website.
With the new roundabouts in operation, the Town found it necessary to rename sections of Main Street that no longer connect directly to the main thoroughfare. This decision aims to mitigate confusion, enhance navigation, and ensure efficient emergency response times. The renaming follows Mecklenburg County guidelines, which endeavor to prevent redundancies across the county's road networks. As stated on the Town of Huntersville website, "The former section of N. Main Street will be Thread Lane, and the former section of S. Main Street will be Combs Lane."
Residents affected by the change can expect notifications from Mecklenburg County before the new street names take effect on May 1. This name change represents not just a shift in concrete and signs, but also in the flows of daily life for the citizens of Huntersville.
