The Shelby County Sheriff's Office is currently investigating the death of an inmate at the Shelby County Jail that took place this past Sunday. Courtney Berry, aged 36, was pronounced dead after being found unresponsive in a jail restroom, as Action News 5 reported.
According to the same report, lifesaving measures were performed both by jail staff and paramedics upon the discovery of Berry around 9 a.m. He was then rushed to Regional One Hospital in a critical state, however, he did not survive. The initial insight from the SCSO suggests that a pre-existing medical condition might have contributed to his death, although the exact cause must be confirmed by the medical examiner.
Local Memphis revealed that Berry had been booked into the facility on February 21, and was being held without bond following a petition by the state to revoke his suspended sentence. Berry's criminal background included a conviction for attempting to possess a firearm as a convicted felon.
Adding to the details of the incident, FOX13 Memphis stated, that while the official cause of death is pending the results of medical examination, the Sheriff's Office noted that Berry's death could likely be attributed to an underlying medical condition. No further details on what these conditions might have been were immediately available.
