On Easter Sunday, a two-year-old in Jacksonville accidentally shot himself with an unsecured firearm. According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Facebook page, the incident occurred around 7 p.m. in the Wesconnett area. Despite efforts to save the child, he did not survive.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office expressed condolences to the family and emphasized the importance of gun safety in homes. They highlighted the availability of free gun locks at their substations and urged firearm owners to securely store their weapons to prevent accidents.
They also encouraged gun safety education, with resources provided by organizations like Project ChildSafe and Nemours.
