The Town Manager of Matthews, Becky Hawke, praised Avens' approach to community policing, and his overall professional demeanor. She expressed excitement about the new Chief's future impact on the community and the police department.

Avens himself conveyed honor at the prospect of serving Matthews, a town he describes as vibrant, and welcoming. He emphasized his eagerness to foster trust and teamwork within the community alongside the Matthews Police Department professionals. His role, commencing on June 2, will entail overseeing approximately 87 employees across several divisions within the department.
