Authorities in Jefferson County have apprehended a student after threats of mass violence were made against a school. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office disclosed that the threat, noticed on social media last night, sparked an immediate investigation by law enforcement and school officials. WVLT reports that the School Resource Officer (SRO) at the Patriot Academy, along with the Criminal Investigation Division of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, collaborated with Jefferson County Schools and the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security to assess the credibility of the threat.
According to the Sheriff's Office, the probe led deputies to a residence this morning where they made the arrest. The unnamed juvenile is now being held at the Richard L. Bean Juvenile Detention Center in Knoxville. The exact nature of the threat has not been disclosed, but WBIR relayed that deputies had taken the juvenile into custody for threats of mass violence on school property.
This incident comes as the latest in a series of school threats that have increasingly become a top concern for communities nationwide. The arrest emphasizes the zero-tolerance policy that law enforcement and schools have taken regarding such threats. "Every threat to our schools, staff, and students are a top priority and we will work until those responsible are held accountable," the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office posted on their official Facebook page, as part of a detailed social media update.
