Commuters in Jefferson Parish, take note: extensive roadwork is set to impact travel on Eastbound US 90 BUS. Beginning on Tuesday, April 15 at 6:00 AM and expected to last until 7:00 PM the same day, the Harvey Tunnel will be fully closed to traffic, as stated in an announcement by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD).
This one-day inconvenience is merely a precursor to a more extended series of closures. Harvey Tunnel will again be subject to a full shutdown beginning Monday, April 14 at 7:00 PM and continuing until the morning of Friday, May 2 at 6:00 AM. The required roadwork will recur every weeknight during this period except for weekends when the closures will lift, and regular traffic will resume on both Saturdays and Sundays, as detailed by the same DOTD notice.
Motorists are advised to plan and use alternative routes such as 4th Street or the US 90 BUS Elevated Expressway during the specified construction times. The closures, contingent on favorable weather, will enable critical roadway work to be carried out on the busy thoroughfare which serves as a key vein in the local transport network.
For those regularly traversing the area, the administrative forewarning provides an opportunity to adjust travel itineraries to mitigate potential delays. Despite the inconvenience, these closures are a necessary step toward maintaining infrastructure that, much like the fluidity of the Mississippi River that weaves through this storied state, must be tended to ensure safe and effective conveyance of its countless travelers.
