South Metro Fire Rescue has officially transitioned leadership with the swearing-in of a new Fire Chief, John Curtis. In a ceremony steeped in tradition and respect for the service's past and future, Curtis replaced his predecessor last night, in a move to usher the troopers of flame and rescue into their next chapter of service.
Starting as a paramedic back in 2003, Chief Curtis knows better than most the challenges that come with emergency service, a knowledge that he's sure to fully utilize in his new role. According to South Metro Fire Rescue, he's been with South Metro Fire Rescue since 2006 and has, over the years, come to be known for his leadership skills and a particularly future-minded stance on emergency services.
It's under his direction that South Metro has seen the rollout of numerous initiatives. These have not only pushed the envelope in operational capabilities, but they've also launched South Metro to the forefront of fire-based EMS development. From clinical excellence to organizational restructuring, Chief Curtis's thumbprint on the service's progressive compass is indelibly clear.
A committed champion for leadership development and the wellness of firefighters, Curtis has equally split his attention between teaching leadership courses and initiating programs for responder health. "His dedication to community well-being also extends into healthcare, where he serves on a hospital community council," as noted by South Metro Fire Rescue. This dual commitment highlights an understanding deep in the marrow of emergency services, an understanding that the health and readiness of the responders are inextricably linked to the safety and care provided to the community.
