Upcoming road closures in Kannapolis indicate progress on a pivotal infrastructure project aimed at enhancing public safety and area commutes. According to details procured by the City of Kannapolis, contracted crews from the N.C. Department of Transportation will be temporarily shutting down portions of S. Ridge Avenue and N. Main Street this month as they install critical components for a new bridge as part of a $16.3 million grade separation initiative.
S. Ridge Avenue is scheduled for closure from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, to facilitate girder installation for the bridge that will traverse the North Carolina and Norfolk Southern Railroads. As a result, a detour will reroute traffic via Rogers Lake Road, Meadow Avenue, and Russell Street. In a comparable stride, N. Main Street will also see closures from 6 p.m., April 21 until 6 a.m. the following day for continuing work. The recommended detour will guide motorists through Rogers Lake Road, Triece Street and, Lowrance Avenue.
The ongoing project, championed by the Cabarrus-Rowan Metropolitan Planning Organization, endeavors to replace the at-grade crossing previously situated on Rogers Lake Road. Highlighted in the city's announcement, the bridge aims to eliminate the friction between trains and vehicle traffic, diminish the pervasive blare of train horns and address the frequent delays caused by the passing of trains—providing swifter, uninterrupted conveyance for both freight and future passenger rail services.
Completion of all roadway constructions is anticipated by spring 2026, with vegetation establishment work trailing close, expected to conclude by the end of that year. The selected contractor, Albemarle's NJR Group, Inc., has been at the helm since late 2022 and continues to marshal the project towards these targets. In addition to these local benefits, the enhancement is poised to support increased utilization of the rail lines as envisaged by the area's Comprehensive Transportation Plan and 2040 Metropolitan Transportation Plan, a perspective elaborated in the official communication from Kannapolis officials.
