Keizer, Oregon's 16th-largest city, has marked a significant accomplishment by graduating from Oregon OSHA’s Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP). As reported by the Department of Consumer and Business Services, this program, aimed primarily at small- to mid-sized employers, works by guiding them in managing workplace safety and health proactively. Recognizing the city's efforts in continuous improvement, the program involves a five-year commitment to enhancing safety protocols, after which an employer can graduate.

Over its five-year involvement in SHARP, Keizer worked on various projects and process improvements, including the installation of eyewash stations and training for new safety committee members. The Oregon OSHA report also highlighted updates to the city’s respiratory protection program and the establishment of safety protocols for ATV use. While the focus was on project and process improvements, it was the city’s collaborative approach that ultimately led to its SHARP graduation.

Jeff Heyen, chairperson of the city's safety committee, acknowledged the effort and commitment involved in reaching this recognition. "Graduating from the SHARP program is a reflection of the city of Keizer’s commitment to creating a culture where safety is at the heart of everything we do," Heyen told the Department of Consumer and Business Services. "It’s been a true team effort – staff across every department have worked hard to build and sustain safer workplaces, and this recognition reinforces that those efforts matter."

Keizer's participation in SHARP resulted in a days away, restricted, or transferred (DART) rate of 2.21 in 2023, a significant improvement compared to the national average of 3.1 and Oregon's average of 2.7. Following a thorough evaluation with no citations or penalties, Oregon OSHA consultants confirmed that the city has consistently met all safety and health requirements for its employees, including evaluations, training, programs, and procedures. The benefits of the SHARP program extend beyond recognition, contributing to enhanced employee morale, reduced workers' compensation costs, and increased respect within the community.

The city’s participation in the SHARP program serves as a model for cities and organizations focused on improving workplace safety.
