Commuters in Knightdale should be prepared for a small hiccup in their nightly travels over the next couple days, as temporary lane closures are upon us. The N.C. Department of Transportation/ N.C. Turnpike Authority have announced that I-87 will experience temporary lane closures due to construction work connected to the Complete 540 project.
Starting tonight, the familiar hum of tires on asphalt will slow to a stutter as closures take effect between 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. Northbound I-87 is to be pinched first, followed by its southbound kin the next night. This small disruption is a nod to safety as crews are to set to install concrete barriers and crash cushions—an effort to safeguard the lives that streak across I-87's vast stretch.
The Complete 540 project is working to extend the Triangle Expressway, and the concrete barriers are just one part of that plan. Drivers should stay alert when passing through these construction areas.
