A routine traffic stop by West District officers in Knoxville led to the discovery and seizure of a significant amount of illegal narcotics and a loaded firearm. The Knoxville Police Department reported the incident on Facebook yesterday evening.
At approximately 9:40 p.m. yesterday, officers, who were conducting a walking patrol in the Western Heights area, observed what they believed to be a drug transaction involving the vehicle's occupants. After stopping the car on College Street for a traffic violation, a further investigation quickly revealed that the driver, a 46-year-old man, was operating the vehicle with a revoked license due to a previous DUI. A subsequent search of the car led officers to uncover nearly 38 grams of crack cocaine, 18 grams of cocaine, almost four grams of black tar heroin, and over five grams of heroin, as well as a loaded handgun.
The discoveries during the traffic stop resulted in both the driver and the passenger, a 38-year-old woman, being taken into custody on multiple felony drug charges. The passenger faces additional charges for possession of a firearm with the intent to go armed. The Knoxville Police Department praised the West District officers for their efforts to "remove dangerous and deadly narcotics from the street."
