The Knoxville Police Department has announced the arrest and charging of two men, Jaylyn Hudson, 21, and Jayden Conwell, 19, in the fatal shooting of 16-year-old Ayden Russo last month, as reported by WVLT-TV. The March 24 incident, which took place in the 2500 block of Louise Avenue, resulted in the teenager's death from a gunshot wound in the backyard of a residence.
A spokesperson for KPD, Scott Erland, noted that following an investigation, Hudson and Conwell were both detained on Monday with the help of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. During their detention, both suspects were questioned by Homicide Unit detectives and subsequently taken into custody. They have since been booked into the Roger D. Wilson Detention Facility, as detailed by WATE.
Details shared by the police indicated that the shooting was preceded by a planned encounter, as per an arrest report mentioned by WBIR. Conwell informed the police about their intention to buy something from Russo, and Hudson allegedly approached the scene with an "AR pistol" before "gunfire erupts." Before this, Hudson had contacted Russo using his Snapchat account, which led to the eventual confrontation and Russo’s tragic death.
The loss has profoundly affected Russo's family, with his sister, Shirley Baker, sharing her grief in early April. "You know how boys are, but like he will let me hug him, he'll let me kiss him. So it just hurts that I won't be able to do it again," Baker told WBIR. Baker recounted the shock of receiving the news of her brother's death, emphasizing the persistent sense of unreality that she and others close to Russo continue to feel.
The investigation remains active, with specific information about the circumstances surrounding Russo's death still not released. A person at the nearby home alerted the authorities just after midnight, signaling the onset of a case that now sees two young men facing charges that could alter their lives irreparably, as much as it has already ended Russo’s far too soon.
